About me

I am an English graduate and have worked in a variety of jobs – English language teaching, NHS and legal administration, care work and even a brief stint in door-to-door sales (never again).

I have secretarial, administration, teaching and journalism qualifications. At school I wanted to be an artist, archaeologist, psychologist, journalist or writer. Writing and reading are my main hobbies.

I started this blog on Wordpress to create something positive out of being unemployed. Suddenly I had an outlet for my creativity. I was inspired by other unemployed bloggers (thank you) and motivated by incredible viewing figures (over 1,000 in the first month). Soon after I started blogging, I got two jobs in two weeks. I wrote about how I managed to keep on track, my struggle and what helped me succeed.

I’ve now finished my book after seven years. It’s fiction but based on real-life, which is the best basis for a drama – nothing too unrealistic and a character for everyone. I didn’t know how hard it would be until I started. A good story is like a patchwork quilt, painstakingly woven into individual chapters. It needs a clear but unpredictable plot with the time to fully develop characters and it needs an entertaining script. The most important thing is not to rush it. Then you have the challenge of balancing description with dialogue. You can’t have too much of either or your novel begins to lack substance.

As I write I become the character, I imagine their thoughts and feelings and I inhabit their world. It’s a surreal out-of-body experience and quite enjoyable, escapism at its best. You are not just watching or imagining the story, you are the story. It is hard to understand unless you try it, but it is like being the main character in the Neverending Story, where the book becomes his life as he reads.

So make yourself comfortable and get involved in my blog! Any feedback and comments are welcome. A big thank you to those who have followed me – your support is my inspiration.
